Lone Star Quilt
Spectacular Lone Star (Bethlehem or LeMoyne Star) Quilt, circa 1890. This prime example of a star quilt is in near mint, unwashed condition. Solid colors of dark green, maroon and cheddar along with light-colored prints and double pinks make up the rest in this fabulous, showy quilt. It’s very possible this quilt was made in Pennsylvania but was found at auction in Alton, New York. The border is dark green and folded over front to back. The quilt appears to be entirely hand stitched with the possible exception of the floral back (green and red) which is made in three pieces sewn together. The batting is thin. In addition to the center 8-point star, there are matching stars in each corner and half stars on each side. The size of this quilt is 83” x 83”. Quilting is mostly outline and is 6-7 stitches per inch (measured in 5 different quilt locations and averaged). Condition: this quilt is in near mint, unwashed condition. There is one separation of the binding on the back that is approximately ¾” in length. See the photograph. There is a purple blotch on the back but it appears that it would soak out and seems to lie on top of the fabric and is not through the fabric. There are a few light brown spots. See photograph. To reference a similar quilt, see Jeannette Lasansky’s book, IN THE HEART OF PENNSYLVANIA, published by the Oral Tradition Project, Pennsylvania, 1985, page 60. Could this quilt be a Heiser or Jodon quilt? Please ask questions prior to purchase and if you need more photos, please request them.
